What is the Functional Movement Screen?
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool designed by physical therapists at Functional Movement Systems to identify compensatory movement patterns that are indicative of increased injury risk and inefficient movement that causes reduced performance. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is more than simply a screen - rather, it is part of a larger philosophy that identifies movement dysfunction objectively, and together with my subjective eye and programming, gets people interested and empowered with self correction to prevent pain & injury.
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) assesses seven basic movement patterns to identify tightness and weakness in the body – so I can help you correct them before they cause major problems. Think of it as a way to help you see and address your body’s “blind spots” more clearly. Body blind spots are areas of overuse, underuse, misuse, abuse, or areas you just don’t perceive very well and left untouched, these spots are catalysts for pain and injury. The FMS helps me identify muscle asymmetries, tightness, weakness and other risk factors for injury by examining the mobility and stability of the hips, core, shoulders, knees, spine and ankles. I work with sports teams, student athletes, fitness & recreational athletes, yogis and companies to help empower self care and to build a resilient and sustainable body.
Movement is the universal language of human expression. Understanding the how and why of moving well helps us aspire to move often.
